Are You Getting Enough Leads?
Seven reasons the phone isn’t ringing, and how to find the one that’s costing you most.
Every small business owner hits this point. The work is good, the reviews are fine, but the enquiries have gone quiet. It’s tempting to throw money at ads. Before you do, check the basics. Most of the time the problem isn’t the market. It’s one or two gaps in how people find you and get in touch.
Where the Enquiries Are Falling Through
- Your offer isn’t clear. If someone can’t tell in a few seconds what you do and who it’s for, they’ll keep scrolling.
- Your website hides the next step. Interested visitors who can’t find a phone number or enquiry button will ring your competitor instead.
- You rely on referrals. Word of mouth is great until it dries up, and most businesses have no plan B for the quiet months.
- You’re hard to find on Google. If you don’t show up on Google Maps or in local search for what you do, only people who already know your name will find you.
- Your social media doesn’t ask for anything. Posting often means little if no post ever points people to a call, a booking or an enquiry.
- You don’t follow up. Old quotes and past customers are the easiest leads you’ll ever get, and most businesses never go back to them.
- You don’t know where leads come from. Without tracking, you can’t tell what’s working, so you can’t do more of it or stop what isn’t.
It’s Rarely All Seven
Most businesses aren’t getting all seven wrong. Usually one weak link drags everything else down. Great visibility with no follow-up still leaks leads you’ve already paid for. Great follow-up with no visibility means there’s nothing to follow up. The fix isn’t doing more of everything. It’s finding the one that’s broken.
Three Quick Checks You Can Do This Week
- Count last month’s enquiries. Calls, emails, form fills, messages. Write the number down so you have something to measure against.
- Ask every new enquiry how they found you. One simple question tells you which channels are earning their keep.
- Look at your website on your phone like a stranger would. Can you tell what you do and how to get in touch within five seconds? If not, start there.
Know your numbers first
Then fix the weakest link, not everything at once.
This is the step most owners skip. They add another marketing job to an already full week instead of stepping back to see where leads are slipping away. As an outsourced marketing manager, I spend one dedicated day a week with each client, and I only take on three at a time. The first thing we do is find where your enquiries are leaking, then fix that one thing properly before moving on.

How many leads should a small business get each month?
It depends on your industry and price point. The number that matters more is how many enquiries turn into paying customers. Lifting that rate often beats doubling your lead count.
Should I spend more on ads if enquiries are low?
Not until you know where things are breaking down. More ad traffic to a website that doesn’t convert just means paying more to lose leads at the same spot.
What’s the quickest fix?
Usually making it obvious how to contact you. A clear phone number, enquiry button or booking link at the top of your website costs nothing and can be sorted in an afternoon.
