How BNI Members Can Help Each Other on Social Media

Your chapter is already a referral team. Here’s how to make it a social media team too.

Every week you sit in a room with 20 or more business owners who want you to do well. Yet most of them never like, comment on or share your posts. That’s a missed opportunity. Social platforms reward posts that get early engagement, and a chapter that backs each other online gets seen by far more local customers. Good BNI social media habits don’t take much time. They just take a little organising.

Easy wins every member can start this week

  • Follow every member’s business page. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Google Business Profile. It takes ten minutes and means you’ll actually see their posts.
  • Comment in the first hour. A real sentence beats a thumbs up. “Great tip, we did this last year and it worked” tells the platform the post is worth showing to more people.
  • Share with a line of your own. “I’ve used Sarah for our bookkeeping and can’t recommend her enough” is a referral in public. A bare share does far less.
  • Leave Google reviews. If you’ve done business with a member, a review is one of the most valuable things you can give them. It helps them show up in local search for years.
  • Post about your one-to-ones. Snap a photo, tag the member and say what they do. It’s free exposure for both of you.

Set up a simple chapter system

  • Start a group chat for posts. A Messenger or WhatsApp group where members drop a link when they post something. Everyone knows where to look.
  • Run a member spotlight. Each week, feature one member. They post about their business, and the whole chapter comments and shares.
  • Make a roster. Two or three members each week commit to engaging with everyone’s posts. Nobody gets left out.
  • Create content together. Film a quick 30-second interview at the meeting, or team up on a joint tips post. A builder and a mortgage broker have plenty to say to the same customers.

What to avoid

  • Don’t spam. Twenty comments that all say “great post!” look fake to customers and to the algorithm.
  • Only recommend what you know. Your public endorsement carries your name. Keep it honest and it keeps its value.
  • Don’t forget your own posts. The chapter can only boost you if you’re posting regularly in the first place.

The big idea

A share from a fellow member is a referral the whole town can see.

Most BNI members are brilliant at what they do and short on time for marketing. As an outsourced marketing manager, I help small businesses plan what to post, film short videos that get watched, and set up simple systems like this one so the work happens without it taking over your week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does engaging with each other’s posts really help?

Yes. Comments and shares soon after a post goes up tell the platform people are interested, so it shows the post to more people. The key is to keep it genuine.

How much time does this take?

About ten minutes a day. Check the group chat, comment on a few posts and share one with your own words. A weekly roster spreads the load.

What should our chapter post about?

Member spotlights, one-to-one catch-ups, client wins, quick tips and behind-the-scenes photos. Short videos of members explaining what they do work especially well.
